4 RV Storage Hacks

4 RV Storage Hacks

11-06-2017

Finding ample storage for personal belongings can be a bit of an ordeal for RV owners, especially for those that own smaller units or have few storage compartments. It’s situations like this where RVers have to put on their thinking caps and get creative! Here are a few ways we try to think outside the box in order to actually fit everything inside the box.

Hang with adhesive hooks.
Apparel like jackets, hats, and purses can become quite cumbersome when tossed over chairs and tables. Adhesive hooks like those sold by Command have proven to be a real effective space saver in our tiny 26 foot motorhome. We have hooks in every room. We hang up clothing items we use on an everyday basis in our bedroom, hang loofahs in our shower stall to dry, quickly collect and deposit our keys on the hooks next to the front door, and hang wall fixtures that help make the place feel a bit more homey.

Narrow down your dirty clothes.
Laundry baskets come in all shapes and sizes and can be rather bulky. It was difficult for us to find one that didn’t take up a whole section of living space. A walk down the trash can aisle at our local supermarket led us to a stack of narrow containers. Meant as a kitchen trash can, we instead utilized the white, plastic bin as a hamper and squeezed it under our work desk, next to the folding chair, a perfect fit!

Sidestep shoes for the shoe holder.
In our old sticks and bricks home, we had a deep drawer filled with all kinds of doo-dads we’d use here and there. We called it our “junk drawer” and filled it with items like small flashlights, lighters, markers, pens, mini sewing kit, super glue, eye glass cleaner and mini repair kit, batteries, mini screwdrivers, nail clipper kit, etc. The junk drawer was a hodgepodge of tools that we utilized on an almost daily basis and stocking them all together made finding things, oddly enough, more convenient for us.

Our motorhome does not have enough drawers to allot for a junk drawer. After perusing the dollar store, we opted for a shoe holder with plastic, see through holders. We hung it on the outside of our bathroom door which sits in between the bedroom and kitchen area, a convenient location for us to retrieve items for a quick fix. Plus, the many compartments allow nicknacks to be separated by function, making each easier to find in a pinch.

Roll up with the clothes.
Even though we downsized on apparel, fitting all of our T-shirts and shorts in a fairly tight cubical drawer had become almost impossible. We initially folded each item before placing it atop the next. The stack became too high and bulky, more than the drawer could fit. Instead, we incorporated our backpacking know-how and began rolling up each clothing item and fitting them side by side before creating another stack. This method works like a charm and there is extra space leftover!
