After 50 years of producing recreational vehicles, German RV maker Hobby announced its 600,000th caravan has rolled off the production line at its Fockbek caravan factory in Schleswig-Holstein. The factory, which employs 1,250 workers, produces up to 100 vehicles per day. In 2018, Fockbek, one of the largest caravan and motorhome production sites in Europe, produced 12,000 caravans (what are referred to in the US as travel trailers) and 2,000 motorhomes. Overall Hobby produces up to 13,500 caravans as well as up to 2,800 motorhomes and vans each year.
Founded in 1967, Hobby is known for its numerous groundbreaking innovations, including the introduction of automatic reversing systems, the use of hot-dip galvanized trolleys, the development of the cassette toilet and, more recently, the expansion of modern communications technology, based on the CI-BUS board management system developed by Hobby. For 2020, Hobby is producing a new model of its popular Optima OnTour Hobby van, equipped with a queen-sized bed and an insulated/heated waste water tank.
