Seven West Virginia state parks and forests will be offering a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day in an effort to get more West Virginians outdoors in 2019. Hikes will take place at Pipestem State Park, Tygart Lake State Park, Watoga State Park, Kanawha State Forest, Chief Logan State Park, Cacapon Lodge and Blackwater Falls State Park.
Matt Combs of The Register-Herald speaks with West Virginia State Parks Chief Sam England, and relays what he had to say: “Hiking is a year-round activity and the experience is different each time, depending upon the season and temperature. Our parks and forests are known for our trails and beautiful scenery, and hiking is the number one activity that park visitors enjoy.” Hikers are advised to arrive 15 minutes early and to bring water, sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing, hats and gloves. Each hiker will receive a patch upon completion.
