River State Park in Montana Closed Due To Ice

HELENA, Mont. - Montana State Parks has announced a temporary closure of River State Park due to excessive buildup of ice and snow on the river, caused by this winter’s below average temperatures and heavy snowfall. The park’s boat camps are covered with over a foot of snow. The river is closed to all floating between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge, and will remain so until further notice. The park is usually open all year.
The River is a popular destination for multi-day float trips and a renowned location for trout fishing, with only one public put-in and take-out site for its entire 59 miles. Float trip permits are awarded annually by lottery to prevent overcrowding and over-fishing, but those who don’t receive a lottery slot can also contract with an approved outfitter for a River experience.
Visit the River State Park webpage for updates on the closure and options for float excursions.
