Oregon Considers Flexible Pricing At State Park Campgrounds

SALEM, Ore. - Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) has proposed an innovative program that would allow it to vary campsite rates within a set range at state parks. The new rule would permit a slightly higher rate at high-demand campgrounds, typically those along the Oregon coast, and a lower rate at less popular campgrounds in the interior, with rates set for each park individually.
The goal of the new system, according to Lisa Sumption, OPRD director, is to help the state parks system serve more people during peak camping season. "Many of our parks have capacity, but people just don't know about them," Sumption said in a press release. "With the ability to vary campsite rates, we could entice people to explore new parks and hopefully discover their new favorite campground."
The public is invited to comment on the proposed new rules through September 10, 2018. Comments can be made online at this link; by email to OPRD.publiccomment@oregon.gov; or by mail sent to Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, attn.: Katie Gauthier, 725 Summer St NE, Suite C, Salem OR 97301.
OPRD will hold a public hearing on the plan at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Room 124A, 725 Summer St. NE, Salem.
