Although the new visitor center at the Wright Brothers National Memorial on North Carolina’s Outer Banks won’t open until Oct. 20, the National Park Service (NPS) is hosting a free event on the evening of Sept. 29, 2018. From 8 to 9 p.m., Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter will present a curated light art display projected on the Wright Brothers Monument. The show is part of Hofstetter’s Light Art Grand Tour USA showcasing 50 United States monuments. This is the artist’s second tour of US monuments, with more to come. A full schedule of events can the found on the Light Art Grand Tour website.
The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a concert by the Honors Jazz Band from local First Flight High School. The light show that follows will include images of the Wright Brothers’ gliding and flying experiments and the history of the national memorial, as well as highlighting the brothers’ connections with Switzerland - including their use of the Swiss Gallet watch to time their first flight. Representatives from the Gallet Watch Company will be present at the show.
The NPS recommends viewing the display from the east side of Big Kill Devil Hill and suggests that guests bring flashlights or headlamps to navigate in the dark safely. For updates, visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial website.
