Wyoming Public Media reports that scientists have identified an new thermal area in Yellowstone National Park through satellite imagery. Comparisons of infrared images made from space led researchers to the discovery of a hot spot located deep in the park’s back country. The new thermal area, as yet unnamed, is between the Tern Lake thermal area and Tern Lake, about a half-mile off park trails, and about 12 miles from the nearest trailhead.
"You can go back through time and see this area used to be covered by trees and now it's an area where there's a bunch of dead trees, bright soil and it's a hot spot," Greg Vaughan, a United States Geological Survey (USGS) research scientist, wrote in the Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles. “Using the time slider tool in Google Earth, one can see how this area has changed since 1994âyou can see the changes in the vegetation and the emergence of the thermal area yourself!
