The website of the Conservation Alliance announced three grants totaling $85,000 from it Public Lands Defense Fund (PLDF) all aimed at defending public lands in Utah. Earthjustice received a $55,000 grant for a court challenge of President Trump’s attempt to reduce the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Outdoor Alliance and Trout Unlimited received grants of $10,000 and $20,000 respectively, to help ensure that Forest Service road-less area protections remain in effect in Utah. The state has petitioned the Forest Service, requesting permission to develop its own plan to manage the road-less areas, a step that conservation experts say would likely undermine the current protections for these land.
The Conservation Alliance established the PLDF in January 2017 with multi-year commitments from Patagonia, The North Face, and Arc’teryx, and added contributions from Farm to Feet, GRAYL, and BoCo Gear during 2018. Previous grants have gone to organizations seeking to defend public lands in Utah, Montana and Oregon. “We are pleased to have a fund dedicated to defending our public lands,” John Sterling, executive director of The Conservation Alliance, said in a press release. “Most of our funding continues to support proactive conservation efforts, but current political challenges force us to make grants to defend the gains we’ve made over the past 30 years.”
