The city of Redding is looking to upgrade and expand Caldwell Park, but first it would need a $6.7 million state grant. Redding is competing for state money that was established by Proposition 68, the $4 billion parks and water bond act of 2018. Redding could find out by next spring if they got the $6.7 million state grant. David Benda, of the Redding Record Searchlight, relays in his article "The expansion would happen east of the Market Street Bridge. The new amenities would include a bicycle park, expanding the existing parking lot, a classroom structure, a shade structure and an event zone and food truck area." Other improvements would include: a wall ball court at the Teen Center, installing a shaded outdoor exercise equipment center, a new ADA bathroom to replace existing bathroom, a lighted multi-purpose athletic court, renovating the trail access and event space, and installing a paved pathway from the event space to the Sacramento River Trail.
