WOODCOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. â The Meadville Tribune, a news outlet in Pennsylvania, reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will keep a campground at Woodcock Lake open next year. The campground had been operated by Crawford County under a multi-year contract, but county commissioners opted out of that agreement earlier this year, citing the cost of repairs to the park’s aging infrastructure, including a $93,000 cost o repair the 200,000-gallon water storage tank in 2017. Officials say the county has lost about $65,000 a year operating and maintaining the 311-acre park, and that fees received from campers did not cover the costs.
"The most important thing for us is to keep the facility open (for camping)," Carol Vernon, spokesperson for the Corps’ Pittsburgh District, told the Times. "We've got a valuable resource for the public and there was no way the Corps was going to allow it to be closed." She said the Corps of Engineers will operate the campground and park in 2020 and is training people in management of the property, but hopes to find an operator for 2020 and beyond. Woodcock Lake Park & Campground were built by the Corps as part of the Woodcock Dam project. Since the mid-1970s the Corps has leased the property to the county at no cost.
