SEELEY LAKE, Mont. - The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) announced that camping in Montana’s Seeley Lake Ranger District in the Lolo National Forest will be free to all campers, from Sept. 4 until the beginning of the 2019 season. The no-fee option is in effect at the Seeley Lake, River Point, Lake Alva, Lake Inez and Rainy Lake campgrounds. The Lake Alva Campground will remain open while small diameter subalpine fir are thinned along the main access road and around the outer circle of the campsites, part of the effort to reduce future wildfire damage. The Big Larch Campground and day use area will remain closed until further notice.
“This makes sense to offer this incentive to the public to enjoy their public lands,” Seeley Lake District Ranger Rachel Feigley said in a USFS release. “We hope this also provides a boost to some degree to the local economy, which was impacted last year by the long fire season and this year by the closure of Big Larch Campground.”
The 2-million acre Lolo National Forest in west central Montana is a land of lakes and mature western larch forests that are especially colorful in the autumn. Lolo offers a variety of all-season recreation, including camping, boating, swimming, and in winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Several of the no-fee campgrounds are located on lakes, and boat ramps remain available at Seeley Lake and Lake Alva. Boats can be rented in the nearby town of Seeley Lake.
