The Commissioners of the Port of San Diego announced that they have approved a 66-year lease to a subsidiary of Sun Communities, Inc. for its Costa Vista RV Resort. The destination resort is the first lease granted for San Diego’s new 535-acre Chula Vista Bayfront development, a masterplan that also includes a resort hotel and convention center, as well as 200 acres of parks, a shoreline promenade, walking trails, shopping, dining and ecological buffers to protect wildlife habitat. The lease calls for Sun to invest a minimum of $55 million for on and off-site improvements; the Port will receive a percentage of the gross revenues from the rental of RV park model sites, concessions and other rentals. Sun Communities, which operates more than 100 RV resorts across North America, expects to break ground soon.
The plans for Costa Vista RV Resort, located at E Street and Bay Boulevard, include 246 sites for RVs and park model plus a variety of amenities, including pools and a Jacuzzi; a day spa with massage treatment rooms, sauna, and workout gym; a grill restaurant; an entertainment arcade and game room; business center; covered picnic area with outdoor grills; children’s rock climbing and playground, bocce ball courts and horseshoe pits; and a welcome center with a marketplace, restrooms, showers and guest laundry facilities. “Sun’s Costa Vista RV Resort will be an amazing amenity on its own and will be the first in a series of development projects that the South Bay community has wanted for decades,” Port of San Diego Commissioner Ann Moore said in a news release. “What is now a largely vacant and underutilized industrial landscape will soon be a thriving recreational, residential and resort destination on the Chula Vista Bayfront.”
