OREGON CITY, Ore. - Many say RVs are the latest incarnation of the covered wagons that helped create our country, and this year, modern pioneers can recreate the route used by many westward bound families across six states as the famed Oregon Trail celebrates its 175th year. The historic wagon route stretched 2,170 miles from Independence, Missouri to its official end in Oregon City, Oregon, crossing deserts, prairies and mountains, leading thousands of families west on the way to a new life. This year, 17 cities along the original route will host special events and spotlight entrepreneurs making their communities stronger.
“The Modern Pioneer theme is critical to this campaign,” Casey Knopik, regional public relations manager at Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory, said in a press release. “We want to inspire travel to each of the destinations along the Oregon Trail and encourage visitors to spend a few days experiencing these areas to the fullest.” For a full list of participating destinations, suggested itineraries and more, go to Oregon's Mt Hood Territory website. Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory has partnered with cities and states along the route to create a social media campaign that tells both the story of the trail’s history and life along the route today.
