The Ruidoso News reports that a new village-owned campground next to the Grindstone Reservoir in Ruidoso, New Mexico is 90 percent complete. The 10-acre site will offer 22 campsites, five dry RV sites, restrooms, showers and drinking water, but no fire rings or grills due to a village-wide ban on open flames. Campers will have access to the 38.8 acre lake, hiking and biking trails, and water-based activities such as canoeing and swimming. Rodney Griego, director of Ruidoso Parks and Recreation, told the News that numerous things were taken into consideration during the planning stage, including watershed, fire, police, emergency access and neighborhood access. He also met with a U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist to ensure that the planned campground would not impact visiting ospreys often seen catching fish in Grindstone’s waters. Griego says he expects the campground to be open from early spring through late fall.
The new campground is part of a nearly half-million dollar investment by the village of Ruidoso aiming to increase revenues from recreation. New facilities at the reservoir include a $90,000 Wibit Inflatable Water Park. Funds for the campground and Wibit, plus parking lots, restrooms and roads, were drawn from the lodgers tax fund, a percentage tax charged for nightly rentals that goes to the village for promotion of tourism and the local economy.
