[KUOO] - In recent months, Marble Beach State Recreation Area has been closed due to renovations on the property. Marble Beach State Recreation Area is one of the most popular destinations on Spirit Lake, Iowa. KTIV News reports that work on a $3.5 million renovation project at the Marble Beach Campground on the west side of Big Spirit Lake is at a standstill, and progress has been much slower than expected.
According to KTIV staff, Frank Rickerl is the Northwest State Parks District Supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He says wet weather this past spring and summer, and now the cold, is what’s behind the delays. “We had over 30 days where the contractor couldn’t work due to rain, so it’s going to put the project behind. The spring is really going to be the deciding factor. If we have a decent dry spring we should be able to finish it on time. Otherwise we might have to make some adjustments and lengthen the time we have the campground closed,” said Rickerl. Original plans called for the Marble Beach Campground to be open again for camping in May of 2019.
