DETROIT, Mich. - According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit automakers are turning their uniquely American creativity and attention to detail to a new generation of pickups including the Ram Laramie Longhorn and Ford F-150 King Ranch. Fiat Chrysler’s 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn, for instance, features leather seats with filigree-like stitching usually found on cowboy boots, Mexican spur-style tooling on the metal-plated rims of dashboard gauges, saddle-bag buckles on map pockets, and “Laramie Longhorn Edition” burnt into the dashboard wood with a hand-held branding iron.
“We want the truck to have soul, so you feel like you’re buying something that was crafted uniquely for you,” Ram interior design chief Ryan Nagode told the Free Press, in a story picked up by USA Today.
Over at Ford, the design team sought inspiration with a visit to the King Ranch, largest spread in Texas, for its luxury pickup, the Ford F-150 King Ranch. “The trip to the ranch was really eye-opening,” F-150 color and materials manager Aileen Barraza told the Free Press. “I wanted the interior of the F-150 King Ranch to feel like I felt walking into the family home of the King Ranch.” The ranch’s Running W brand appears on the pickup’s leather seats and center console.
