With several National Forests surrounding the county with the current warmer, dry and windy weather, Gunnison has become prone to wildfire breakouts. The environment has increased the fire danger, or threat looming over the land. There are currently no fire restrictions in place; however, residents and visitors are advised to practice fire safety by exercising extreme caution with campfires, charcoal grills and agricultural burning.
According to the press release by the Gunnison County Emergency Management Dept., "outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to clear flammable material away from any campfires, check current fire restrictions before lighting a afire, put out campfires with water before leaving campground and making sure the ashes are cool to the touch." Campfires should not be left unattended for any reason. Be careful to contain fires within rings, stoves, grills or fireplaces. The County states that fireworks and other explosives are not allowed on any federal lands, including campgrounds and recreations areas. State, federal and local agencies are monitoring the weather and fire conditions closely and regularly. If needed, fire restrictions and bans will be strictly enforced.
