The Coconino National Forest near Sedona, AZ, is seeking public input on the proposed Red Rock Ranger District Trails Enhancement Project through April 15. The project would add more than 34 miles of non-motorized Forest Service system trails and 17 miles of constructed trails as well as adopting 17 miles of user-created routes into the official trail system. The haphazard growth of user-created routes has created the need for a planned and purposefully built system of trails in the National Forest. Most of the proposed trail enhancements are in Yavapai County. The largest addition of trails is planned at the Western Gateway, west of Sedona and north of state Route 89A, with a total of 26 miles of trails added. Other trail additions include the three-mile Transept Trail near the Village of Oak Creek; two new loop trails east of the Town of Camp Verde; and three miles of user-created trails in the Thunder Mountain region. The Red Rock Ranger District, currently encompassing 300-plus miles of system trails, includes some of the most popular and heavily visited locations in Arizona.
The enhanced trail system has been in the planning stages since 2013. The proposed project, including detailed maps, is located on the Forest Service website at the US Forest Service websire right here. The Forest Service intends to complete its environmental analysis this summer. Implementation of the project would occur over several years, likely beginning this fall, depending on funding and partner support from Friends of the Forest and the Sedona Red Rock Trail Fund. Interested parties may send comments by e-mail to comments-southwestern-coconino-redrock@fs.fed.us and include “Red Rock Trails” in the subject line, or comment in person at the Red Rocks Ranger Station in Sedona.
