The Historic Cameron Trading Post's history dates back to the time when a swayback suspension bridge, now called the Historic Tanner's Crossing Bridge, was completed over the Little Colorado River in 1911. Soon afterwards, two brothers, Hubert and C.D. Richardson established the Cameron Trading Post, visited at that time by Navajo and Hopi Indians who bartered their livestock, wool and blankets for dry goods. Today, it is an enchanting stopover for people enjoying the magnificent Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas. In Cameron, which has a community of less than 1,000 people, you can glimpse the beauty of the Hopi people and Navajos and their arts and crafts. The Hopi are an agricultural-based people living on high mesas within the Hopi Reservation, which is surrounded by the Navajo Reservation. You can witness the artistic and culturally diverse activities of peoples whose histories span back long before European arrivals. Enjoy the wonderful artistic expressions seen in Hopi and Navajo weaving of rugs and wares, their exquisite basketry, silver jewelry and their lifestyles. You are, however, asked to be sensitive of their beliefs. Do not take pictures in proscribed areas and avoid photographing certain religious ceremonies. Make sure the children's smartphones are not in evidence. Hopi mesas are sometimes closed, or restricted, during sacred religious ceremonies throughout the year.
Cameron Trading Post and RV Park is a short 60 miles to the Hopi Second Mesa and the Hopi Cultural Center at Arizona Highway 264, Second Mesa, Ariz., 86043. At the Cameron Trading Post Gift Shop, you will find on sale Hopi Kachina dolls, Hopi and Navajo basketry, pottery, silver overlay jewelry and other American Indian gifts. Ashley Colorado, a bright spokesperson for the gift shop says, "We are busiest in summer, when we open at 6 a.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. Winter hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The post and RV park are open year round except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day."
The Historic Cameron Trading Post RV Park provides full hook-ups and pull-through sites, adjacent the to the Cameron grounds. While there are no public restrooms or showers, reservations are not required. Space is available on a first come, first serve basis. Nightly rates are $35. Monthly rates are available at $350, plus tax. These rates are records for the 2017 season. There is a $25 pet fee. AAA and AARP discounts are available. If you would prefer, you may enjoy staying in one of the wonderful lodge rooms, recently redecorated with Indian crafts, including basketry and hand-loomed Indian rugs. The rooms are spacious with an historic feel. There are cozy and comfortable single rooms at their Grand Canyon Motel with hand decorated wood furnishings and Southwestern art.
There exists all the modern amenities and the reminders that you are in the true west. Many of the rooms come with a balcony view of the Little Colorado River Gorge, with lovely Cameron Floral Gardens at the front door. Each offers full amenities: cable TV, wifi, heating and air conditioning, private bathroom with bath and/or shower, coffee maker and telephone. Motel room rates, November to February, are $79 with tax, and in March to October the price stands at $119 plus tax. Cameron Trading Post also features spacious Double Rooms, each with double beds, featuring marvelous views of the Little Colorado River Gorge where you are surrounded with the beauty of Southwestern culture.

Cameron's Luxury Suites provide comfortable furnishings arranged to please, each with convenient wet bar and dining area. Two beautiful queen-sized beds complete with an armoire dresser provide a comfortable spacious feel with a master bath designed for pampering. Luxury room rates with one bed are $139 plus tax, November-February. With two beds costing $199 plus tax from March to October. All rooms are non-smoking.
In the area are wonderful hiking trails where elk herds, eagles and other wildlife can be seen. Hikers call the area “breathtaking!” Hikers' comments on the location can be seen at alltrails.com. RV'ers and other vehicle drivers traveling through town find overlooks and other scenic stops along the way. After a half hour's drive from Cameron along the South Rim be sure to take a leisurely exploration of the Grand Canyon's wonderland.
