Not long ago I wrote about Chemical Free Cleaning Products for your RV. I talked about some DIY green cleaners like vinegar, lemon juice and witch hazel – and those are all great ideas. They are very effective cleaners. However, they aren’t for everyone. Some people want to be able to walk into a store and pick something up off the shelf, go home, and spray it on their counters.
And that’s OK.
What I want to impress upon those of you who are “non-DIYers” is that there are plenty of terrific green cleaning products out there. You don’t have to get out of the game completely. And I’m going to tell you all about it right here.
My Experience with Store Bought Green Cleaners
When I want a cleaner from the store, I use Method brand. They have some pretty awesome products for kitchen and bath. I also love their hand soap. All of the products are plant based and nontoxic. I use the countertop cleaner, dish soap, bathroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, and floor cleaner. I also use their laundry detergent – which I absolutely love.
What I found is that my RV has a very pleasant, clean smell. It is not perfumey; you don’t smell a chemical fragrance. It just smells clean and fresh. It is very nice. I use the ginger-yuzu on my floors and counters – it smells amazing.

Freshening the Air – Naturally
I was having a lot of headaches and sinus issues, especially when spring decided to fully commit down here. I decided to clear the air – literally. It was pretty easy to do and I didn’t have to open a window.
Get a few plants. Houseplants help to “cleanse” the air. You don’t need an indoor jungle; just a couple should do the trick.
Use essential oil. I touched on this and candles in DIY Healthy Scents for your RV, but I need to elaborate on this a little.
I put some water in a spray bottle, added a little alcohol some drops of essential oil to make a natural air freshener. I have several scents that are designed to refresh or cleanse the air, but my favorite one is the blend for my sinus issues. It has a strong peppermint oil base and some other herbs for better breathing. I made a big bottle and put it in the bathroom, but I spray it all over the house. It has a nice peppermint smell with herbal undertones.
I have been doing this for about six weeks and this is what happened:
- My sinus issues significantly improved
- I don’t get headaches nearly as often
- I don’t get insects in my home
Last year at around this time some of the outside insects would find their way inside. I understand it’s an RV and I am in a campground, but I did not enjoy the idea of sharing my living space with insects. However, I spray this peppermint oil around and I don’t see any insects. Flies won’t even come in here.
I started spraying it all over because it helped me breathe easier. It smells very clean and fresh. The blend I got is called Breathe Easy. I got it at Walmart in the vitamin section. You don’t have to go with that one though, Amazon has quite a few.
Method also has some air fresheners, but I can’t speak about them. I’ve been using my own blends and haven’t had a need for air fresheners.
