Smell That Ocean Air: Get the Most Out of that Last Beach Trip of the Summer
Summer is coming to an end and the kids are going back to school (woohoo!!), but doesn’t that one last beach trip sound nice. The beach is such a tranquil place to be and having the convenience to stay right there on the sand and wake up to that smell of ocean air, well that is just priceless. What an incredible way to cap off the amazing summer you had with family and friends. Here are some tips on making that last beach trip one you will never forget, but for all the right reasons.
The Tide is High
First thing you should think about when camping at the beach is where you are parking and how close you are to the water. Most people are quite aware that the water levels rise but it is important to think about before you set up camp. You can ask some of the locals or do a little research to get all the information you need to keep your belongings safe and dry. You will also want to check the weather report. Weather can change things from calm and tranquil to crazy and unpredictable in a matter of hours when a storm rolls in.
Use the Facilities
When you are camping at the beach you will need to make sure you understand the campgrounds sewage and waste water rules. If there is no septic system you may have to pump out your tanks and you need to be prepared for that. Many great beach campgrounds offer showers and bathroom facilities on-site. I encourage you to use those amenities if possible. A shower in your RV may be just what you are looking for after a day of sun and fun; however the last thing you want is a bunch of sand in your grey tank.
The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow
When you are camping at the beach wind may come up and cause your RV awning to be closed. You should bring along extra devices that can create shade to keep your sun exposure down. For example, a beach umbrella or tent to lie under would be great. You will also want to apply sunscreen as directed. Even if the day seems gloomy, the sun’s UV rays are still going to be there and you need to wear your sunscreen. Make sure you always stay hydrated and apply then reapply sunscreen as directed. If you do get over exposed to the sun, find some fun things to do indoors when the sun rays are strong and wear a hat when you do go outside.
My Biggest Pet Peeve
Ok, so I do not know exactly why I am get so peeved about this situation, but it may stem from eating egg salad sandwiches with that extra special sand crunch at the beach when I was a kid. I must confess, I am a bit of a crazy when it comes to sand on the top of the beach blanket or inside the coach when we camp at the beach. Sand is inevitable, I know and I get it. My thing is this: if we can limit the amount of sand we track inside we should. I have my kids shower off outside before coming back inside the coach. I also suggest leaving bathing suits to hang outside. We also have a mat that we put down to wipe your feet on and I try to sweep up a lot. This will help limit your sand consumption. Whether you are bothered by this or not, you can do things to eliminate some of your sand issues.
When heading to the beach for that last campout of the season, plan ahead. Think about the things that you need to bring with you and call ahead to campground to check conditions and amenities. The beach is one of our favorite places to camp and even with my “weird sand issue” as my family likes to call it; we always have a great time. Be prepared and enjoy. Happy Trails!
