Hobbies for RVers will keep you from getting caught up in the go, go, go and forgetting about the wonderful fact that we still have the ability to try and learn new things. Many full-time travelers either stick with what they know or hop from place to place to try something new, though they may never stick with it.
But full-timers have more opportunities to try out new activities and hobbies than those who find themselves stuck in one place. But how do you make a new hobby a habit on the road? Hereâs a list of hobbies you can take up while living a mobile lifestyle that you can stick with, no matter where you are.
OUTDOOR HOBBIES
For many travelers, nature beckons them to witness the beauty around them. Outdoor activities are some of the most popular hobbies to take up for travelers who flit from place to place based on good weather. If youâre interested in trying out new outdoor hobbies on the road, here are a few that can be done in almost any state.
Hiking
Whether youâre an active individual or someone who enjoys a leisurely pace in life, hiking is a great way to see the world and stay moving, no matter your age. In almost every state there are places to walk outdoors and take in the views. Some of our favorite states to hike in are Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Washington. But no matter where you decide to try out a hike, youâll be sure to find a few near you.
If you need help finding trails, try visiting AllTrails to find a hike near your current location.

Climbing
Climbing over the last few years has become all the rage. There are places that offer safe climbing indoors, but many like to try their hands at rock climbing outdoors. Whether you enjoy a challenge or like to see the sights from new heights, climbing outdoors allows you to grow stronger both mentally and physically and have a new perspective on the views you see from the ground.
Some of the best states for climbing include Colorado, Utah, North Carolina, Tennessee, and more! Find a climbing route near you here or take a class at a local outdoor outfitter like REI to learn how to safely climb outside.
Cycling
If you havenât ridden a bike in years, now is the time! Cycling allows you to get where you need to go, but at a slower pace to take in the sights. There are clubs and groups that meet up regularly, no matter your experience, all over the world. Itâs as easy as picking up a bike from your local bike shop and getting behind the handlebars. Whether youâre interested in getting a bike to have a little freedom away from your big rig or for exercise purposes, cycling is a hobby that can be done at any skill level. And the best news is that the only thing you need to do to get better at this hobby is to get behind the wheel!
INDOOR HOBBIES
Music
Music is a great hobby to pick up inside your rig. Small instruments like the ukulele or fold up keyboards work well in small spaces, so you wonât be crowding up your RV with big speakers or wires. You can take classes at a local music store or you can YouTube a variety of music lessons for beginners. Some of the musicians I know tote around their instruments to play at local restaurants and bars to make a little side cash when theyâre on the road, too. Not only can you make music a hobby, but maybe it can lead to other opportunities to sustain your travels along the way.
Knitting
Weâve talked about knitting here on MobileRVing before, but knitting is one of the top hobbies for those on the road. It requires little space and the materials needed to knit can be picked up at almost any craft store around the country. Knitting is another hobby that has local get-togethers in many states, which makes it a great hobby to pick up if youâre looking to make more friends as you travel.
Drawing/Painting
When it comes to learning how to draw and paint, there is a school of thought that practice makes perfect. If youâve always wanted to draw or paint, now is the time to take up the arts, even if itâs only to remember the places youâve been throughout your travels. Some travelers carry a small notepad with them everywhere they go, while others take the time to set up a small canvas and easel. You donât have to be Van Gogh to paint or draw. Just pick up a pencil or paintbrush and give it a Gogh!
Fly Lure Tying
For the outdoorist that can no longer make their way outside regularly, creating something that can be used in the outdoors can be just as rewarding. Fly fishing is a sport that many people love, but itâs not always easy to find places to fly fish. Instead of constantly searching for fly fishing places, you can create your own kind of fly fishing indoors. Fly lure tying is something that crafty outdoorsmen and women have taken up to customize the lures they want to use for fishing. Many have taken up this hobby out of necessity, but others have done it because it allows them to utilize their creativity to contribute to something they love. Not only is it challenging and fun, but many will also pay a pretty penny for custom lures, too.

A Hobby is What You Make It
At the end of the day, anything you choose to pursue will ultimately become a hobby if you choose to make it one. If you give yourself enough time to get past the learning curve, you can easily pick up new hobbies as you travel from place to place. Hobbies donât always have to be grand activities or something you truly excel at, but theyâre a great way to pass the time and find new passions at every stage in your life, especially on the road.
