Camping is messy business. This is especially true if you are staying on an unpaved site. The lack of pavement means sand and dirt are constantly being tracked inside, and this can make for a frustrating trip if dirty floors and gritty feet bother you.
Dirty floors do bother me, and gritty feet annoy me even more. Unfortunately, as a full-time RVer, these are things I deal with quite a bit. That said, I have found a few solutions that help reduce the amount of outdoor debris that is brought inside, meaning I can stop wasting all of my energy cleaning dirty floors.
Here are my favorite tips for keeping RV floors clean:
Invest in an Outdoor Rug
One of the very best pieces of outdoor equipment you can buy is an outdoor rug. These nifty mats are easy to sweep clean, and capture the bulk of dirt from your shoes before you get inside. On top of all that, they help keep your campsite looking neat and clean and make it possible to walk outside barefoot even when your site is unpaved.
In addition to the outdoor rug, you may also want to consider putting a mat down at the door. This will encourage people to actively wipe their feet clean before heading into your rig, meaning less dirt comes in on their feet. You can then easily shake the mat clean each day to give people a fresh surface to wipe their shoes on.
Store Shoes Outside
Why not nip your dirt problem in the bud by storing dirty shoes outside? Invest in a pair of slip-on, waterproof shoes for each person in your family and store them all in a tub outside the door. By doing this, you can ensure dirty shoes never even make it through the door. This is an especially helpful tip if you’re camping in wet weather, when mud tends to be a problem.
Everyone knows carpets are more difficult to clean than most other types of flooring. By pulling the carpet out of your trailer or motorhome and putting down some sort of hard flooring solution, you can reduce the amount of time and energy you must put into keeping your RV floors looking nice. Additionally, you eliminate the need to carry a vacuum cleaner around, which is incredibly helpful for those trying to stick to strict weight limits.
I hope these tips help keep your floors in tip-top shape so you can focus less on work and more on play the next time you go exploring.
