Easy and delicious campfire desserts are just what you need now that camping season is here. It’s time for cooking dinner outside and sitting around campfires under the stars. While most people will turn to s’mores as their go-to dessert as they relax around those fires, others may be looking to get a bit more creative. Luckily, there are plenty of other campfire dessert options to choose from, and each one is just as delicious as the last.
Not sure where to start when picking your camping desserts? We’ve compiled our favorites in this article. Pick and choose a few from this list and you should be good to go for your next adventure into the wilderness.
Let’s begin with the simple sweet-treat-on-a-stick category. Sure, the traditional s’more falls into this category with the marshmallow roasting and all, but there are many twists you can put on this classic camping treat. Besides, there are other options for sweets on a stick, meaning roasting your dessert on a stick should never be ruled out.
Try some of these options:
Mixed Up S’mores — Change up the usual s’mores by setting out different options. Flavored marshmallows, fudge stripe or Samoa cookies, chocolate graham crackers, and peanut butter cups or peppermint bark can all make s'mores even more delicious than usual.
Cinnamon Roll-Ups — For a completely different snack on a stick, try cinnamon roll-ups. Simply wrap crescent roll dough around a stick, roll the dough in a cinnamon sugar mixture, and cook over a fire. Yum!
Sore Thumbs — Finally, there’s the option of making “sore thumbsâ€. These pockets of goodness are great because they can be customized. Just wrap biscuit dough around the end of a wide stick, bake the dough over the fire, then fill with anything you lie. Some people prefer whipped cream, while others like pudding. Nutella is another great option, as is ice cream.
Foil-Wrapped Favorites
Of course, there’s also the option of wrapping some tasty ingredients up in a foil packet and letting the coals work their magic. The foil packet is perfect for those who like to keep the mess to a minimum, and because they only require the embers of the fire, they are great for making at the end of the night when everything is winding down.
Here are some of our favorites:
Banana Boats — Take your bananas from ordinary to extraordinary by adding a few extra ingredients and a campfire. Start by cutting a slit in the peel of a banana. Scoop out a few chunks of banana and add marshmallows, caramels, peanut butter chips, and/or chocolate pieces in those open spots. Wrap the whole thing in foil, place in the coals, and allow to melt. Enjoy with a spoon and be prepared to get messy.
Baked Apples — For some seriously delicious apples, bake them before eating them. To make these treats, core as many apples as you like, fill each one with butter, brown sugar, and dried fruits, wrap in foil, and cook in the coals of a fire. These are an ideal fall-time treat but can be enjoyed anytime of year.
Campfire Cones — A super simple yet 100% delicious option is to make campfire cones. Start with a box of waffle cones. Fill each one with marshmallows, chocolate, and anything else you might like. Wrap the cones in foil and let them warm up on the coals of the fire. Unwrap and enjoy!
Dutch Oven Delights
If you have a Dutch oven at your disposal, you could also use that to whip up some delicious treats. There are hundreds of fantastic baked goods that can be made in a Dutch oven, and there is no better way to cook while camping. That said, with so many recipes to choose from, picking just one can be overwhelming. Let us help!
Here are two of our top picks:
Easy Dutch Oven Cobbler — This cobbler recipe is so easy you won’t believe it. It can incorporate any fruit you like, and is great topped with whipped cream or ice cream. Best of all, the end result is absolutely amazing. Why work harder when you can work smarter and have the same great reward?
Campfire Monkey Bread — Monkey bread may not sound very appetizing by its name alone, but trust us when we say this dessert (or breakfast) is one of the best things you’ll ever make in your Dutch oven. Each delicious little morsel is like the middle of a cinnamon roll, and it simply doesn't get much better than that. This recipe is both easy and tasty, making it a win-win.
Last but certainly not least, there is the option of whipping out the pie iron. A pie iron is an incredibly handy tool when cooking over a campfire, and therefore one that should always be brought along on camping trips.
Try these delicious pie iron options on for size:
Easy Campfire Pies — Obviously, a pie iron can and should be used to make pies on occasion. Luckily, there is a super easy way to make pies while camping that requires very little prep work or cleanup. Spray the insides of your iron with cooking spray. Place a piece of white bread on either side of the iron. Put some canned pie filling between the two slices and sprinkle a small amount of brown sugar on the filling, squeeze the bread together, and hold it over the fire to toast and heat.
Stuffed French Toast — Want to make something a bit more complex in your iron? Blueberry stuffed French toast is a wonderful option. This amazing treat can be wasted for dessert or for breakfast, and is something your family will be begging for even when you aren’t camping. The recipe can be found here.
With so many options to choose from, you may be wondering which one to pick. Our advice is to go on enough camping trips this season to hit each and every dessert on this list. This will ensure you don’t miss out on any of these fabulous treats!
