4. Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
The first book of a fantasy romance duology based on Chinese mythology is titled Daughter of the Moon Goddess. The plot centers on Xingyin. Years of hiding her from the Celestial Emperor by her mother; yet, when her magic was discovered, she ran away from home and landed straight at the Celestial Kingdom's court. Xingyin becomes friends with the prince despite having to hide her identity. She sets out on an epic mission to try to free her mother from her curse. This book, which is packed with magic, betrayal, and romantic drama, is well worth reading.
5. Vladimir by Julia May Jonas
The situation between two married professors—a husband and wife already dealing with allegations of inappropriate behavior against him—becomes even more problematic when a famous novelist visits the campus of a tiny college. The novel examines concepts of desire and obligation in a world where blurred lines can have disastrous consequences. It is dark, humorous, and well timed for our modern period.
6. The Candy House by Jennifer Egan
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit From the Goon Squad by author Jennifer Egan features some of the same characters and ideas again in The Candy House, although it's not quite a sequel. Instead, the gripping, perceptive, and wholly captivating book explores a conflict over who owns human awareness, the perils of technology, and the influence of family across generations and periods. Whether or not you are familiar with Egan's world, it is incredibly thought-provoking and heartbreaking.
7. Meet Me Halfway by Lilian T. James
This heartfelt love story between a single mother and her cranky neighbor doesn't hold back when it comes to the difficult aspects of life or the emotions that love engenders. The person who means most in Madison's life is her kid. You could say she doesn't have time for anything else, especially not love, working two, sometimes three jobs and attending evening online programs. But as we all know, love occasionally arrives from the house next door or other unexpected areas. Her grouchy neighbor is difficult to get along with, but Madison and her son Jamie enter his life with ease and provide colors he never imagined were conceivable.
