There is nothing quite like showing your kids the amazing things in this world. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that going on adventures and making new discoveries with my son is the very best part of parenting. That is one of the reasons our family chose to RV full-time, and so far we have zero regrets.
That said, there are some things to keep in mind when RVing with the younger set. After all, kids have their own set of needs that must be met, and sometimes those needs don’t mesh well with RV travel. Therefore, I have compiled below a list of my top 4 tips for RVing with kids.
#1: Take it Slow
The very best memories my family has made when traveling have been when we stopped to smell the roses. While a young couple with no kids might love fast-paced travel, it just doesn’t work well with kids who need regular bathroom breaks, time to explore their surroundings, and regular naps and meals.
Rushing from attraction to attraction and putting in extremely long travel days when little ones are involved does nothing but leave everyone feeling grumpy, something that makes for a poor overall experience.
#2: Retain Consistency
Every parenting book on the face of the earth will tell you that kids thrive on consistency. I am here to say that this couldn’t be truer. Therefore, even though RV living is one of the least consistent lifestyles out there, it is important to retain as much consistency as possible while traveling with children. This means that you’ll want to do your best to hang onto bedtime routines, nap times, and even regular meal times.
#3: Get Out and About
Not a single RVer I have ever met enjoyed being cooped up in their rig all day. RVs are simply too small for sedentary living. This is even more true when kids are involved.
Because little ones have seemingly endless amounts of energy, you are going to want to make sure you head out of the trailer or motorhome on a regular basis in order to avoid going crazy. Go hiking, swimming, or bike riding. Visit a museum or zoo. Get out and see the world. After all, that is the point of traveling.
#4: Plan, Plan, Plan
Stressful situations become even more stressful when kids are involved. For this reason, it is highly important to have well-laid plans for every adventure you take. Not only that, but you’ll also want to have a backup plan and a good idea of what you would do should an emergency occur in any given situation. This will help keep your family happy, healthy, and safe.
With these tips in mind, go ahead and start planning your RV adventures with your little explorers. I promise you won’t regret it for a second, and the memories you make will last a lifetime.
